A cottage landscape should work for the people who use it. For this Butterfly Lake project in the Township of Muskoka Lakes, we began by talking with the clients about their family routines, how they entertain, and the experience they wanted guests to have from arrival to the lakeside gathering areas.

We reviewed the design with the clients throughout the planning process. Those conversations included their expectations for time together at the cottage, the enjoyment they hoped to get from the finished space, and how the investment might affect future resale value. Planning also accounted for applicable Muskoka Lakes bylaws and project approval requirements.

The project planning also included a sauna foundation and utility needs, along with outdoor lighting to make the walkways, steps, and gathering areas more inviting after dark. Together, these elements shape a cottage landscape designed around family time, entertaining, and the natural beauty of Butterfly Lake.

Granite Slab Steps

Natural stone steps leading up to a cottage entrance, bordered by shrubs, boulders, and fresh mulch

Granite slab steps create a durable route between different levels of the Butterfly Lake property. Their substantial appearance suits the natural character of a Muskoka cottage while making movement through the landscape feel intentional and comfortable.

Custom Granite Flagstone Patio

Wide granite step and stone walkway leading to a cottage and barrel sauna, with newly planted shrubs along the path

The custom granite flagstone patio provides space for outdoor dining, conversation, and entertaining. Its layout was considered alongside the family’s plans for gathering at the cottage, creating an outdoor area that feels connected to the rest of the property.

Granite Flagstone Walkway

A granite flagstone walkway links the cottage’s outdoor spaces, including the steps and patio. The stone path gives family and guests a clear route through the landscape and brings a consistent natural material to the project.

Softscape

Landscaped cottage entrance with evergreen trees, shrubs, natural boulders, and dark mulch

Softscaping helps the new stonework settle into the surrounding Butterfly Lake setting. Naturalization with native plants adds texture and seasonal interest while supporting a landscape that feels at home in Muskoka.

Outdoor Lighting

Landscape lighting illuminates a lakeside stone walkway, curved steps, and surrounding shrubs at night

At Butterfly Lake, landscape lighting brings out the beauty of the stonework and gardens after sunset. Warm, carefully placed lights illuminate the granite steps, flagstone walkways, and shrubs, creating an inviting route between the cottage, sauna, patio, and lake.

The soft glow adds depth to the landscape without overpowering the peaceful lakeside setting. It makes the outdoor spaces easier to enjoy in the evening and gives the entire project a beautiful finishing touch.
